Travel is medicine for the soul. We embark on our journeys for multitudinous reasons - to see places so beautiful it hurts, to soak up moments of bliss with the ones we love, to embrace cultures throughout the world, and maybe even to find a part of ourselves along the way. Though we may voyage across oceans and deserts, travel is a state of mind with the concept of growth at its core. And sometimes growth can be challenging! But these challenges should not be feared, because there are ways you can ready yourself for the educational blessings of travel both before and during your time away from home.
Go with an open mind
Like preparing the soil before you plant the first seed, you must equip your mind to receive all of the lessons that travel has to offer. Although you may have plans for the activities you will be engaging in each day or expectations for how the trip is going to pan out, make make room for the serendipitous and go with an open mind. Be open to happy accidents and try to view your traveling companions as well as the locals with fresh eyes. I promise you, this will make every trip even more wonderful! Educate yourself before you depart Whether you’re jetting off to Chiang Mai or just driving a couple hours from home, acquiring information on your destination beforehand is useful. Usually the farther you go, the more preparation you’ll want to do. This could be doing things like learning a few words in the local language, reading up on cultural practices, or even just making sure you know when your check-in time is. Thinking about these factors ahead of time allows you to enjoy yourself in the moment. Embrace the local culture The locals know best, so when you can, do as they do! Sample the local cuisine (it’s bound to be better than what’s on the tourist menu), explore hidden parts of the location, and generally embrace the local culture. By doing these three things, you’ll find that your travel experiences become more intentional and meaningful. So, where are you headed next?
